Why humility is important in Leadership

June 5, 2019 by Michelle Ray

When I think back to my career and one of the most influential leaders in my history at work, it was an individual who practiced tremendous humility and I found it to be an incredibly attractive quality. This was a person who was very transparent and always willing to let us know when she had made a mistake and whenever she was successful, she also knew how to be humble and there wasn’t a lot of room for her ego in her leadership style and today people are still craving that humility for their leaders and from their leaders.

You see, humility is not humiliation. Humility is strength. Humility is a willingness to display that you are human and that you do make mistakes, so be the humble leader because when you are the humble leader, you are the authentic leader and that will add to your repertoire of skills that will make you successful for years to come.

One of the most decorated war veterans in Australia was a fellow by the name of Sir Edward Dunlop and he had this to say about humility. He says the ideal leader is the servant of all able to display humility without the loss of authority. Humility as a leader is one of the most desirable qualities that you can posses. It’s what makes you authentic, it’s what makes you attractive to your workforce.

So, remember, humility is something that all of us can tap into. All we need to do is show our true selves and show up in total integrity and honesty.

Leading Organizations: The Ability To Influence (SHRM)

April 25, 2019 by Michelle Ray

So, SHRM identify leadership competencies in three different categories, leading organizations, leading self, and leading others. And when it comes to leading organizations the ability to influence is one that they identify, and something that is so important to you as a leader because it’s not about your title.

Are you an influencer? What does it mean to be able to influence? To be able to influence in your organization is something that everyone of us needs to focus on because when you are able to influence you are able to demonstrate a genuine interest in others before putting forth your own agenda. You are also a person who is setting a trend, who is an innovator, who recognizes that it is important to be one step ahead.

So, you are unafraid to chart a new course. And you are ready to be able to influence a situation by the way that you carry yourself. So, think about your own demeanor. Think about how you come across. People who are influencers recognize that it’s all about who they are in terms of their character, in terms of their passion, in terms of their enthusiasm, in in terms of their conviction.

Great influencers are confident in their position and they recognize that before they can advance their own position they need to be able to listen first in order to then influence. Is that you?

Are you a Positive Influencer or a Chronic Complainer? Choose wisely.

October 30, 2015 by Michelle Ray

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of meeting and working with an association that invited me to speak at their annual conference on the subject of influence. Although their membership is extremely diverse, the common denominator for all their members is the fact that they are in a position to profoundly impact their leaders, clients and co-workers on a daily basis. They were keen to learn more about the art and science of influence, and what struck a chord with me was the fact that they were passionate about making a positive difference in their respective workplaces.
